The primary focus of this class is to build your grammatical, writing, reading, and critical thinking skills. We will cover various elements of grammar along with an introduction to literature, including units on short stories, novels, and plays. Our main novel units will be Beowulf, Hamlet,Night, and Lord of the Flies. Also, you will often be completing either a daily timed write or a grammar exercise. Finally, I will typically assign one essay a month and you will maintain a writing portfolio that records your improvement in the composition area. In Honors English / Language Arts 10, students will add to the list of various genres of classic and contemporary narrative and informational texts that have been read and analyzed throughout high school, but with a special focus on British and World Literature and SAT success. Tenth graders will engage these texts through transformational thinking. Honors English is for motivated students that want to go more in depth with the areas mentioned above. There will be a greater emphasis on preparing students for a post-secondary education in both the areas of reading and comprehension. Honors English will foster a greater sense of independence, self-discipline, and work ethic.
